Useful Italian phrases and their meanings

What is your name?

Literally, what do you call yourself? Use with one person informally.

My name is Sara.

Replace Sara with your own name. Mi belongs with chiamo.

I am Giulia.

Sono can introduce who you are. Italian normally omits io here.

Nice to meet you.

A common brief response to an introduction.

How the sentence works

Mi chiamo introduces your name: literally, I call myself. Come ti chiami? asks a friend their name. Sono means I am; io is usually unnecessary. Piacere is the usual short response when meeting someone.
