Useful Italian phrases and their meanings

How are you?

Use stai with someone you address as tu.

I am well, thank you.

Sto is the first-person form of stare. Bene means well.

And you?

A short, natural way to return the question to one friend.

I am well too.

Anch’io means I too. The apostrophe joins anche and io.

How the sentence works

Come stai? asks one person how they are, informally. Sto bene means I am well. Italian often leaves out the subject because the verb gives that information. E tu? returns the question. Tu is informal singular you.
