Useful Spanish phrases and their meanings

I do not understand.

No makes entiendo negative. This is useful as soon as a conversation gets difficult.

Do you speak English?

Hablas addresses one person informally. Use ¿Habla inglés? for usted.

More slowly, please.

Despacio means slowly; más adds more. It is fine to use this as a short request.

Could you repeat that?

Puedes means you can; repetirlo means repeat it. This is a friendly informal request.

How the sentence works

No normally goes before the verb: no entiendo. Hablas addresses tú; habla addresses usted. Más despacio asks for a slower pace. ¿Puedes repetirlo? combines you can, repeat and lo, meaning it.
